Prescription Eyewear & Rx Filling Service
Does ESS offer prescription eyewear solutions for any of its products? [ top ]
Yes, ESS offers Rx solutions for nearly all of our eyewear products. Some products utilize an Rx carrier that inserts behind the primary ESS ballistic lens; other products--such as our Rx-Ready sunglasses--feature primary prescription lenses. If your own optometrist or optician fills your prescription, be sure to verify their certification and ability to install lenses that will meet ANSI Z87.1 impact standards!
ESS offers an easy-to-use online Rx Filling Service, which uses skilled optometrists to customize your prescription into high-impact lenses. When you choose this service (you will be prompted for it when adding any Rx-Ready product to your cart), your product will be delivered to you in a ready-to-wear condition and certified to safety standards, where applicable. Check individual product Rx configuration details for information. Click here for more info on ordering Rx lenses through ESS.
How does the ESS Rx Filling Service Work? [ top ]
For all ESS Rx Inserts and most ESS Sunglasses, the ESS Rx Filling Service provides a one-stop prescription eyewear solution. ESS uses skilled optometrists that are very familiar with our products and always use high-grade, shatter-resistant lens materials. ESS stands behind the quality of this service to provide you with high-quality products and services at very competitive rates.
After you have configured your prescription, selected your lens options, and subsequently completed your online order, ESS will fill your prescription and ship you the completed frame/Rx systems. It is really that simple.
How long does the ESS Rx Filling Service take? [ top ]
We strive to ship all Rx orders within a week's time, but some prescriptions can take up to two weeks. Please plan on 1-2 weeks for processing.
Do I need to fax my Rx form to ESS? [ top ]
No, ESS allows you to enter your own prescription details. However, to ensure the accuracy of your data, you are welcome to fax in your details to 1-208-726-4563. Please include a cover page that references your order number.
If you have any questions during your order entry, please contact Terry, our certified optometrist, at: 1-208-734-3937 or terry@mountainwestoptical.com.
If I don't like my prescription, can I get a refund? [ top ]
ESS guarantees satisfaction with prescriptions filled through the ESS web store. If you are not satisfied with your prescription lenses, ESS will correct the lenses or refund the cost of the prescription filling service, at our discretion, within the first 90 days of purchase.
ESS also has a Bifocal Lens Guarantee. If within the first 90 days you are unhappy with bifocal lens treatments, ESS will remake a lens to any configuration of equal or lesser value at no charge. For example, ESS will not charge to rework a Progressive Bifocal into a Standard Bifocal or into a Single Vision prescription. Charges will only apply if new configurations are more expensive than the original bifocal lenses (such as upgrading a Standard Bifocal to a Progressive Bifocal).
Note: Only documented, recent prescriptions (not older than 12 months) will be eligible for satisfaction-guarantee work on corrective lenses filled by ESS. ESS is not responsible for incorrectly-entered prescription details. Please carefully check your info for accuracy before submitting!
I scratched my Rx lenses--what can I do? [ top ]
ESS understands that scratches or other lens damage can happen. Within the first 12 months of purchase, ESS will replace damaged lenses at 30% of the original cost, plus shipping.
Note: Discounted replacements can only be filled with the same lens type and prescription as was done in the original order
My Prescription shows costs for "Added Rx Costs". What are those? [ top ]
"Added Rx Costs" refer to prescriptions that have Prism, or are outside of the standard Sphere or Cylinder ranges (shown in red). They can also include the cost of adding Bifocal (Standard or Progressive) to a prescription. These costs are itemized in the cost calculator in the left-hand column of the page.
How is the pricing for this program calculated? [ top ]
Each completed prescription solution includes an Rx frame (either an Rx Insert or an Rx-Ready Sunglass) and a Prescription Fill (i.e. the corrective lenses customized to your prescription). Please note that for each set of lenses that you choose, an equal number of Rx Frames or Rx-Ready Sunglasses is required.
Pricing is based on a standard "Rx Base Price" for each model. "Added Rx Costs" are incurred if a prescription requires Prism, high Sphere or Cylinder values (shown in red), or if Bifocal lens options are selected. Lens colors other than Clear will affect the price, as do specialty lens treatments (such as anti-reflective coatings).
In all cases, fully-itemized pricing is clearly displayed on the site as you build your order.
Can I get a transitional lens for an insert that goes behind a primary lens? [ top ]
Although possible, ESS does not recommend it. All ESS primary goggle and eyeshield lenses are made from high-grade polycarbonate, which in addition to providing unparalleled impact resistance, also filters 100% of harmful UV light. This UV filtration conflicts with Transitional (aka Photochromic, or light-adapting) lenses, which require UV light to activate their transformation. As such, Transitional lenses positioned behind any UV-filtering material do not function well enough to warrant installation.
I have two numbers on my Rx form for Pupillary Distance. What does that mean? [ top ]
PD vales can be written as one number (known as a Binocular PD), which represents the distance between both pupils, or written as two numbers (known as a Monocular PD), which reflects the distance from each respective pupil to the center of the nose bridge.
Adding the two Monocular PD values together will always equal the Binocular PD. However, Monocular PD values cannot be reliably achieved by dividing the Binocular PD in half. Faces are rarely perfectly symmetrical, and it is common for one eye to be further from the nose bridge than the other.
Because Monocular PD values are more precise, they are required for Progressive Bifocal lenses.
Underneath Pupillary Distance, my Rx form shows OD and OS. What are those? [ top ]
If you have two values underneath the Pupillary Distance header, it means your Rx was written in terms of Monocular PD. This is the distance from the center of each pupil to the center of your nose bridge. OD refers to your Right Eye, and OS refers to your Left Eye.

No, ESS does not include these additional fees in the shipping quote. Since these rates differ greatly between countries, these charges are the purchaser's responsibility. If you are unfamiliar with your country's import duties, please check with the appropriate national or local authority prior to ordering to determine possible fees or tariffs.
I placed an order on your website. When will my credit card be charged? [ top ]
Your credit card will not be charged until your order ships. When you initially place an order with ESS, our secure payment gateway performs a pre-authorization on your credit card. This pre-authorization allocates a portion of your card's line of credit towards your purchase from us. If we do not use this pre-authorization for some reason, (e.g., you cancel your order), the pre-authorized amount will be restored to your credit card's line of credit in 3-5 days.
How is tax calculated for my order? [ top ]
In certain states, for any taxable products, you will be charged the appropriate sales tax based on where your order is shipped. ESS will not charge sales tax on your order if you are shipping to an APO/FPO address, or if you have filed a tax exemption certificate with ESS.
How can I track my order once it has shipped? [ top ]

Product
Do ESS lenses offer UV protection? [ top ]
All ESS lenses filter 100% of harmful UVA/UVB rays. Even our clear lenses offer 100% UVA/UVB protection. UVC rays are filtered by the outer atmosphere and do not reach the Earth's surface.
How do Polarized lenses work, and how are ESS Polarized lenses different? [ top ]
Polarized lenses reduce glare from reflective surfaces. Light travels in wave- form, arriving at our eyes in a spectrum of vibrations occurring in both vertical and horizontal axes. Most reflected visible light--such as the blinding glare associated with water, snow, pavement, automobile glass, etc.--travels in a horizontal direction.
Safety-rated ESS Polarized lenses contain undetectable, vertically-aligned filters that cancel out--via inference patter--these horizontal waves, dramatically improving your eyesight and reducing eye strain in many environmental conditions. Reflections from windshields diminish, perception of objects beneath water surfaces is improved as glare is reduced, and the harshness of overly-bright skies or landscapes is greatly mitigated.
ESS Polarized lenses are special in that they offer you the full-assurance of an ANSI-Z87.1-2010 safety rating.
Do you sell Laser Protective Lenses? [ top ]
Yes. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, we do not publish our LPL specifications. If you have interest in learning more about orders or technical details regarding our LPL program for goggles or eyeshields, please contact us at ess@esseyepro.com with further questions regarding specificity inclusive with details about your organization and/or your credentials.
Is there a prescription option for the CDI MAX? [ top ]
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide an Rx option for the CDI MAX due to the large size and significant curvature of the lens. If you are looking for an interchangeable prescription lens option, we recommend you consider the Crossbow or the CDI.
Product Care & Maintenance
How should I clean my ESS lenses? [ top ]
Always refer to the product use & instructions card that came with your ESS eye pro, as specific instructions may apply. Gently wipe the lens with your provided ESS microfiber cloth, and/or gently wash with warm water. Never use household cleaning solutions, sprays, alcohol-based products, or solvents.
If I have trouble with my lenses fogging, what is the best solution? [ top ]

WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY
"Dear ESS:I just wanted to say "Thanks" for a good product that served me well during my time in the Gulf, and for the excellent customer service. I will be strongly recommending your products to my Marines if/when we end up deploying again. Your gear works as promised, a nice change from most over-hyped equipment. And, your response to my inquiry about buying new lenses for my goggles was simply excellent customer care.
Thanks again," Sgt Sean Bell, USMCR
