ESS SPONSORS VETERAN ATHLETE TO RACE IN FIRST-EVER USA CYCLING-SANCTIONED PARACYCLING MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENT, TO RUN IN CONJUNCTION WITH U.S. NATIONALS

WOUNDED USMC VETERAN JASON SELLARS SETS SIGHTS ON MOUNTAIN BIKE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES RACE

July 5, 2012 -- Sun Valley, ID USA

Today, ESS (Eye Safety Systems, Inc.) is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Corporal Jason Sellars USMC (Ret.) in the U.S. National Mountain Biking Cross-Country National Championships, Para-Cycling Division. Mr. Sellars, a Marine of the war in Iraq, suffered a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress during an IED explosion and subsequently spent extended time at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda Maryland fighting through a long recovery process.

Sellars’ drive to extend beyond the limitations imposed by the serious nature of his injuries brought him to Sun Valley in the winter of 2011-2012 as a participant in Higher Ground, an intensive therapeutic recreation program serving veterans with traumatic brain injury/post-traumatic stress disorder. Higher Ground is a nationally-recognized division of adaptive sports pioneer organization, Sun Valley Adaptive Sports, which is renowned for its work with athletes who have disabilities and special needs. Higher Ground has received special recognition from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Department of Excellence, and many other Military and Veterans Administration officials across the country.

Inspired by Higher Ground, Sellars soon found himself applying for a fellowship to return to Sun Valley to work as the Veteran Liaison for Higher Ground. Through another veteran’s nonprofit “The Mission Continues”, Jason succeeded in attaining a fellowship with Higher Ground and paved his way for a return to Idaho. Today he works to spread the message of recovery to full and active lifestyles under the auspices of his role as Veteran Liaison. At Higher Ground, his daily contact with former and prospective program participants establishes an important and empathetic link between the non-profit organization and the veteran military personnel who form its clientele.

“My hope through participating in the National Championships and through mountain bike racing in general is that I can spread a message of encouragement and of possibility to my veteran brothers and sisters. To those who’ve suffered injury of any type, who may see their lives falsely defined by their limitations,” Sellars said. “Even with serious disabilities to contend with, there is so much that veterans have to offer, and so much that we can achieve. Through my work with Higher Ground and with the assistance of companies like ESS, I hope that I can inspire veterans to further challenge themselves, and to see their lives and contributions as positive and significant forces for change.”

ESS has worked with Higher Ground over the years, helping to constructively influence the lives of those who have sacrificed in the service of their country. Many Higher Ground participants have worn ESS products throughout their military careers and deployments, so the connection between the company and the individuals can run deep. Through their involvement in a variety of Higher Ground’s group camps, ESS has found a meaningful and far-reaching way to give back to the military community.“

Higher Ground is a unique organization with an extremely important function,” said Ari Drougas, Communications Manager at ESS. “It is critically-important that we as a society provide our wounded veterans with the tools and confidence to overcome or adapt to their injuries, so that we can in turn learn from their well-established leadership abilities. We’re thrilled to work again with Higher Ground as Jason seeks new challenges with both his charitable works and his athletic aspirations.”

Come and support CPL Sellars and other veterans participating in the first ever veteran’s division of the National Mountain Biking Cross-Country National Championships at 4:40 p.m. July 5th at the River Run side of Bald Mountain.

Media Contact:
Ari Drougas
ESS Communications Manager
ari@esseyepro.com

About ESS: Established in 1998, ESS (Eye Safety Systems) creates advanced eye protection systems for military, law enforcement, and fire/rescue professionals.
ESS Launches World's First Cross-Compatible Eye Protection Platform

New Cross-Series™ Presents Full Spectrum of
Performance and Price Options

ESS (Eye Safety Systems) today revealed its Cross-Series™ platform of interoperable eye protection through the release of the new Crosshair™ ballistic spectacle. The Crosshair™ joins the existing Crossbow® and Suppressor™ product lines to form the Cross-Series™, the world’s first fully interchangeable, customizable, military-rated spectacle platform.

With the Cross-Series™, ESS takes its innovative approach to cross-compatible eye protection to the next level by offering an entire family of interrelated products. This enables anyone to obtain eye pro based upon their own specific performance and price needs, without incurring a sacrifice in overall quality or protection. All Cross-Series™ spectacles are available as ready-to-wear, stand-alone eye protection solutions. Any Cross-Series™ additional lenses, frames, and other kit components can be used interchangeably. The new eyewear platform from ESS is expandable, adaptable, and incredibly versatile. Whether used for high-stakes military missions or recreational endeavors, every Cross-Series™ spectacle offers U.S. MIL-SPEC ballistic protection, an advanced ergonomic fit, and distortion-free optics to deliver enhanced performance in the field.

The new starting point for Cross-Series™ customization is the Crosshair™, an entry-level product that defies limitations. The Crosshair™ exceeds U.S. Military impact and optical standards and provides superior comfort with a universal fit, making it an essential eye protection solution. But the Crosshair™ is capable of much more, as it is built to work with any ESS premium Cross-Series™ upgrades. “The Cross-Series is the first eye protection to meet any requirement: form, fit, function or budget,” said Brian Ross, General Manager of ESS. “With the Crosshair, ESS is able to bridge the gap between price and premium performance. Now anyone who wants military-grade protection and the benefit of our advanced technologies can get what they need, and when they need it, by engaging with the Cross-Series.”

The Cross-Series’ ability to adapt for changing missions and environments is achieved not only through its wide variety of replaceable lenses, but also through the interoperability of the three frame options. The Suppressor™ has the first eyeshield frame optimized for use under hearing protection and communications gear. Wherever eye pro and hearing pro overlap, the ultra-thin Suppressor™ frame minimizes the interference caused between standard temple arms and padded earmuffs. The resulting natural fit reduces the admission of damaging noise and eliminates the distraction and discomfort of headaches and hotspots. The Suppressor™ is a much-needed solution for shooters of every type, and it has wide application in fields such as construction, aviation, motorcycling, and in a variety of sports.

The flagship of the Cross-Series™ is the Crossbow®, which features special flow-coat lens technology to provide its users with the ultimate protection from fogging. By applying separate anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings, each Crossbow® lens is optimized for maximum resistance to environmental conditions. Fogging is abated on the inside of the lens, scratching is minimized on the outside, and the net effect is eye pro that performs best when it matters most. In addition to its unique lenses, Crossbow® spectacle frames also feature padded “no-slip” temple arms that provide a comfortable grip, even when wet. The Crossbow Unit Issue Kit has met stringent requirements to earn a coveted position on the U.S. Army’s APEL [Authorized Protective Eyewear List], and the Crossbow® is the protective eyeshield issued for use by all United States Marines.

Practical reasons for using the Cross-Series™ platform include both its highly-adaptable nature and the functional economy achieved through the use of interchangeable parts. Crosshair™ owners may upgrade their spectacles with premium anti-fog Crossbow® lenses as their needs require. Crosshair™ and Crossbow® owners can adapt their eye pro with the ultra-thin Suppressor™ frame, optimizing their kits for use under ear protection or communications gear. With a range of available lens tints to choose from (including ANSI Z87.1-2010 safety-rated polarized Crossbow® lenses), multiple frame colors, and a full array of replacement parts and accessories, Cross-Series™ products can be configured for use in any environment. Savings over time can also be realized, as the Cross-Series™ users will be able to extend product lifetimes by replacing individual parts, as needed.

For those whose vision requires optical correction, a range of ESS Rx inserts ensures that any Cross-Series™ product will work in combination with a single ESS prescription insert. ESS corrective eye protection products–including the ESS P-2B™, U-Rx™, and Vice™ Rx inserts–can be ordered online through the enhanced Rx functionality found site-wide at www.esseyepro.com.

ESS Cross-Series™ eyeshields are compliant with U.S. Federal OSHA, ANSI Z87.1-2010, U.S. MIL SPEC MIL-PRF-31013 (Clause 3.5.1.1), and CE EN 166.* All Crosshair™ and Crossbow™ lenses provide 100% UVA/UVB protection. Visit www.esseyepro.com/cross-series for further details.

*ESS Crossbow Polarized Lenses are compliant with U.S. Federal OSHA, ANSI Z87.1+ and CE EN 166.

Media Contact:
Steve Dondero
Vice President Marketing
sd@esseyepro.com

ESS Releases New 5B Ballistic Sunglass

Military Eyewear Leader’s Latest Protective Sunglass Includes Safety-Rated Polarized and Corrective Lens Options

ESS (Eye Safety Systems, Inc.) today announced the release of its new 5B™ ballistic sunglass. The leading military eyewear manufacturer’s latest product is the result of extensive research and development and offers advancements in form, fit, and function. The 5B™ was meticulously created to offer contemporary style with an exceptional fit that is compatible with helmets and communication devices.

With thirteen years of experience providing eye protection for use in the world’s most hostile environments, ESS understands that creating stylish, military-grade eye products is critical to eye safety. The Vision Council reports that 90% of eye injuries are preventable through the use of proper eye protection*, so the key is to break the barriers to use; namely, the poor aesthetics, imprecise optics and uncomfortable fit that are typical of safety eyewear. ESS sunglasses are designed to the highest military protection, performance, and durability specifications to support peak performance for any wearer without compromising style and comfort.

“The 5B is a perfect fit under any hat or helmet, and its feather-light weight and flawless optics mean you’ll probably forget you’re even wearing sunglasses,” said Brian Ross, ESS General Manager. “It also fits a wider range of both men and women than any other sunglass we’ve yet made.”

The 5B™ is one of the first ESS sunglasses to offer glare-reducing, ANSI Z87.1-2010 premium polarized safety lenses. ESS is also offering a new suite of frame and lens tints; the 5B™ sunglass frame is available in either matte black or matte grey with a range of lens tints including polarized mirrored gray, mirrored gray, mirrored copper and smoke gray. For those requiring optical correction, the 5B™ can be customized with ballistic polycarbonate prescription lenses, available at www.esseyepro.com.

The 5B™ sunglass is stylish without drawing undue attention – an important characteristic for the military, law enforcement, and firefighting professionals who must often observe uniform or dress code. Standard ESS 5B™ sunglasses are compliant with U.S. MIL-PRF-31013 (Clause 3.5.1.1), ANSI Z87.1 2010 Edition, U.S. Federal OSHA and CE EN 166. Polarized ESS 5B™ sunglasses are compliant with ANSI Z87.1+ 2010 Edition and U.S. Federal OSHA. All 5B™ lenses provide 100% UVA/UVB protection. Visit www.esseyepro.com for further details.

In addition, the 5B™ sunglass is featured in a new charitable sales program. The ESS “Remember 9.11” program offers 25% of ESS’ sales to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in the name of a firefighter who laid down his own life on September 11th, 2001 at the World Trade Center in order to save the lives of many others. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation works to build smart houses for severely-wounded combat veterans, assists the families of fallen public safety officers, and helps injured firefighters recover in burn centers across America.
All U.S. Marines to be Outfitted with New ESS Crossbow Ballistic Spectacles

August 18, 2011 -- Sun Valley, ID USA

ESS (Eye Safety Systems, Inc.) today announced that its Crossbow™ ballistic spectacle has been selected as the standard issue eyewear authorized for use by the United States Marine Corps. All Marines will receive a new set of Crossbow™ spectacles in a total force resupply commencing in 2011 and continuing throughout 2012. The Crossbow™ is part of a complete eye protection system from ESS that includes the Profile NVG™ goggle and the U-Rx™ prescription insert. These three ESS products now represent the only standard issue authorized eye protection for U.S. Marines.

The selection of the Crossbow™ is the result of the Marine Corps Systems Command’s new IBE (Improved Ballistic Eyewear) program. The program was launched to select the best protective eyewear available for Marines by subjecting competing products to a rigorous and extensive series of mission-related field tests and reviews. The IBE evaluation process was completed earlier this year, and the Marine Corps chose the Crossbow based upon the spectacle’s advanced performance characteristics, excellent value proposition, and the unanimous preference for the Crossbow over the competition by the Marine subject test groups. Following the Marine Corps’ own recent announcement regarding the findings of the IBE program, Shannon Day, Project Officer for IBE, said, “The ESS Crossbow has the quality, comfort, and optical clarity the Marine Corps needs.”

The Marine Corps’ choice underscores ESS’ historic role as the preeminent provider of eye protection to the U.S. Military. In 2004, the ESS ICE™ eyeshield became the Marine Corps’ authorized protective eyewear and it maintained that status until it was replaced by the improved spectacle offered today. “ESS is honored to continue to serve the U.S. Marine Corps’ eye protection needs,” said Brian Ross, ESS General Manager. “The PM-ICE team ran one of the most diligent and competitive review processes ever performed for eye protection, and we are thrilled that the Crossbow emerged as the preferred spectacle system for Marines.”

As the world’s leading manufacturer of military eye protection, ESS has the ability to support the significant production volume required to fulfill the USMC’s ballistic eye protection needs. ESS will produce the eye protection needed to outfit the Marines while continuing to meet the very high demand for the Crossbow™ from the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. Having earned a listing on the elite U.S. Army APEL (Authorized Protective Eyewear List) in 2010, the Crossbow’s popularity is still on the rise amongst military and tactical customers and has now expanded to other eye protection users - including hunters and shooters - who appreciate the many benefits of this high-performance military product.

The Crossbow™ spectacle system is compliant with U.S. MIL-PRF-31013 (Clause 3.1.1.1), U.S. Federal OSHA, ANSI Z87.1 2010 Edition and CE EN 166. All Crossbow™ lenses provide 100% UVA/UVB protection. Visit www.esseyepro.com/crossbow for further details.

ESS' 2011 SHOT Show Recap

The National Shooting Sports Federation's annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas is always a rush for exhibitors and attendees alike. Aside from the expected exhilaration and bustle, the unrelenting speed at which the world’s biggest consumer-firearms-related tradeshow proceeds is remarkable. In cavernous halls hundreds of yards wide in any direction, the Hunting and Shooting industries extoll the virtues of their goods while throngs of distributors, store owners, and media members evaluate new products, make new contacts, and strengthen familiar ties.

Away from the main stages where the Hunting and Shooting crowds congregated, the Law Enforcement section of the show proceeded at a slightly more manageable pace. In the Veronese Ballroom of the Sands Expo Center, ESS set up shop with a brand-new tradeshow booth designed to invite attendees off the busy floor, give them a chance to interface with members of the Team ESS, experience products, and hold meetings. Ensconced within a spacious 20’ x 20’ floor space, the Team held court for four long days, taking time to explain the company’s new and upcoming product offerings.

Front and center was the Crossbow Suppressor. The latest addition to ESS’ new “Cross Series” of eyeshields, the Suppressor frame is designed to maximize the comfort and effectiveness of ear protection or communications gear when used in conjunction with eye protection. Another ESS industry-first, the Suppressor frame option and retail Crossbow/Suppressor kits (Crossbow Suppressor 2X, Crossbow Suppressor 2x Plus, Crossbow Suppressor ONE) had already been generating a tremendous amount of interest in the Military field, where ESS’s unparalleled strength as an industry-shaping innovator is already well-known. Riding a wave of military-interest into SHOT Show, Team ESS anticipated a strong positive reaction to the Suppressor but was surprised by the amount of word-of-mouth recommendations made to others by those who visited the ESS booth. The flow of traffic through the booth was heavy, and steady.

“You guys have finally done it…”, “…the solution I’ve been looking for.”, “…a real game-changer.” Over the course of SHOT’s four days, the string of compliments and comments made by attendees stretched on unabated. Tactical trainers, gun range operators, Airmen, federal agents, and many others expressed their interest in using the Suppressor product, and Team ESS members like Vince Baertschi (the one and only, he of the “I Know Vince” patch fame) took it upon themselves to hand out a record amount of free sample product, ensuring that the Suppressor not only left an impression – it left in attendees’ possession.

There was another new ESS product out for show & tell at SHOT as well. The latest ballistic-grade, MIL-SPEC sunglass offering, the 5B, was present in first-shot production model form. Aggressive and sleek in its appearance, the 5B generated a lot of excitement among ESS distributors and customers alike. Slated for commercial release later this year, the 5B will push the technical envelope for ESS sunglasses, offering new features and configurations for frames and lenses while still providing the highest levels of military-grade protection, a characteristic for which ESS products are widely-known and a reason they are the most trusted eye protection solutions used by militaries worldwide.

Toward the week’s end, ESS hosted a pair of happy-hour engagements in the Venetian’s Dal Toro Showroom, which is stocked with rare and exotic sports cars. Opening up with an extremely well-attended reception for ESS’ international distributors, ESS VP of International Sales Connor Duncan greeted friends old and new during a two-hour event that provided a welcome bit of relief from the non-stop walking, standing, and constant meetings occurring on the nearby tradeshow floor. Following the international reception, about 150 ESS domestic military, law enforcement, and industry friends joined the party, mixing with the contingency of friends from abroad, the ESS Team, and several notable representatives from ESS’ parent company Oakley in a spirited get-together.

SHOT Show ended on a high note, with Team ESS’ own non-stop meeting schedules finally drawing to a close and the allowance of a few minutes spent during break-down reflecting on the success of the show and the anchoring physical presence of the brand-new 'industrial-feel' ESS booth. As is the case when attending a large tradeshow as an exhibitor, there was little time available during SHOT Show to pay mind to the innovations and exhibitions of other industry manufacturers, but based upon the words exchanged in restaurants and on casino floors in the long Vegas after-hours, the overall mood at SHOT Show was upbeat, and a willingness to spend exhibited by buyers and distributors was a generally-positive sign.

With SHOT now in the past and the rest of the 2011 tradeshow schedule still outstanding, Team ESS would like to thank those who made our time at the 2011 SHOT Show both memorable and successful. As 2011 is going to be a busy year at ESS, remain on the lookout for new information about upcoming ESS products!

ESS Redesigns Popular CDI Sunglass

ESS Ballistic Sunglass Reconfigured, New Desert Tan Frame Available

December 06, 2010 -- Sun Valley, ID USA

Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) today announced the release of the reconfigured CDI™ ballistic sunglass. The battlefield-proven CDI™ is the most widely used ESS sunglass, well-known for its high-impact protection, interchangeable lenses and aggressive style. With its total redesign, the CDI™ now offers additional comfort, increased durability and enhanced aesthetic appeal.

The CDI™ sunglass has been used worldwide by military, law enforcement, and firefighting personnel since its introduction in 2004. To incorporate recent technological advancements and performance improvements into its flagship sunglass, ESS rebuilt the CDI™ mold from the ground up. "The ESS CDI sunglass line has a long heritage of saving eyes and lives in hostile situations," said Brian Ross, ESS Sr. VP of Sales & Marketing. "We solicited user feedback and built that input directly into product enhancements. The end result of a sunglass that performs better and looks cooler is that it will be worn for longer periods of time. For our customers, that combination equates to an increased reduction in eye injuries."

The list of functional improvements to the CDI™ is significant. Its virtually unbreakable frame now boasts SmartTension™ cam-hinge temple arms that enhance retention and ensure a more comfortable fit over the lifetime of the product. The nosepiece is now co-molded for greater durability, and the temple arms are now wrapped in a proprietary no-slip rubber that keeps the CDI™ in place, even when moistened by sweat. The CDI's adjustable elastic retention strap is now easier to use, and the kit now includes a zippered hard case and a micro-fiber cleaning pouch.

ESS has also expanded the available frame colors for its interchangeable-lens sunglass products. In addition to Black, the CDI™ and larger CDI MAX™ sunglasses are now available in Desert Tan. This color matches many different uniforms and camouflage patterns in addition to providing a new option for off-duty or everyday use. The CDI™ and CDI MAX™ both offer scratch-resistant lenses with superior optics. The Lateral Exchange System™ makes it easy to interchange these lenses, which are available in five colors: Clear, Smoke Gray, Hi-Def Yellow, Hi-Def Copper and Mirrored Silver. For prescription eyewear users, Rx lens carriers are available for the CDI™.

The ESS CDI™ and CDI MAX™ are built for extreme protection and exceptional performance. They are considered Primary Eye Protection by NFPA 1500 and offer high-grade ballistic protection certified to ANSI Z87.1+, U.S. MIL-PRF-31013 and CE EN 166 standards. More information can be found in the High Adrenaline Sunglasses™ section of www.esseyepro.com.

ESS Awarded Contract with French National Police

French Commitment to Personal Protection Fulfilled By Eyewear Manufacturer

Sun Valley, Idaho USA - October 26, 2010

Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) today announced the complete delivery of the first contracted order for ESS protective eyewear by the French National Police. The initial three orders, totaling 30,000 units of ESS ICE™ eyeshields are destined for issue to Police units throughout France tasked with riot control and general public order missions. The French procurement heralds the first nationwide adoption of a higher standard for police eye protection, and occurs amidst growing recognition that ballistic eyewear is essential to prevent serious injury from similar hazards for which ballistic vests are issued.

Prior to entering into its contract with ESS, The French National Police administered a lengthy solicitation and trials process including tenders from eight eyewear manufacturers. All prospective products were subject to laboratory experiments and real world test scenarios, including the CE EN 166 safety-certification process. Additionally, the ICE™ underwent a final performance validation conducted internally by the French National Police, sustaining multiple close-range shotgun blasts without lens penetration.

ESS French Distributor, MP-Sec France, under Managing Director Mr. Jess Plaiter was awarded the contract and oversaw a process whereby the battlefield-proven ICE™ was re-configured to suit French Police specifications. With the ICE LPB™, ESS created a custom product configuration notable for its high-performance anti-scratch and anti-fog flow-coating techniques, product markings unique to the French Police, and special packaging tailored to customer preference.

Through its contract with the French National Police, ESS anticipates serving the eye-safety needs of additional national and metropolitan police forces. "Eye protection is as essential to law enforcement as it is to the military," commented Connor Duncan, ESS Vice President of International Sales. "The Police Nationale should be commended on its initiative to issue ballistic eyewear as standard equipment, which we expect will serve as an example to similar agencies." The worldwide mission of ESS is to provide eye protection to law enforcement, militaries, and all who serve public safety.

The ESS ICE™ eyeshield is compliant with U.S. Federal OSHA, ANSI Z87.1+, U.S. MIL SPEC MILPRF-31013, and CE EN 166. All ICE™ lenses provide 100% UVA/UVB protection.

ESS Introduces Crossbow Suppressor Eyeshield

World's First Ballistic Eye Pro Built to Work with Hearing Pro/Comm Gear

Sun Valley, Idaho USA - October 25, 2010

Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) today announced the introduction of a new ballistic eyeshield: the Crossbow Suppressor™. The first eyewear designed specifically for use under ear cup hearing protection and communications gear, the Crossbow Suppressor maintains the effectiveness of such devices and eliminates soreness around the ear caused by pinching and pressure.

The Crossbow Suppressor will benefit the wide range of end users who wear ear cup devices by providing better performance and increased comfort. Soldiers, pilots, hunters and shooters, heavy equipment operators, and many others will appreciate the product's purpose-built ergonomic design.

"Everyone who has field-tested the Suppressor has given it a very positive review," said Brian Ross, ESS Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "Our customers have been looking for a product that provides this sort of relief. We at ESS are excited to provide another industry first, one with
beneficial applications in familiar and new marketplaces."

The Crossbow Suppressor builds upon ESS' successful Crossbow™ eyeshield platform, with the new offering incorporating the same ballistic lens as a regular Crossbow but exchanging the standard eyeshield frame for an ultra-thin Crossbow Suppressor frame. This new frame is cross-compatible with any other product in the ESS Crossbow series.

The Crossbow Suppressor 2X™ is configured for the U.S. military, international defense forces, and retail markets. It includes two eyeshields, one with the Crossbow Suppressor frame preassembled with a clear lens, and one with a standard Crossbow frame and a smoke gray lens.

The Suppressor ONE™ is a configuration for the tactical and shooting communities, and includes a Crossbow Suppressor with a high-definition copper lens ideal for targeting. The Suppressor frame may also be purchased separately, allowing those who own other Crossbow™ product configurations to upgrade and optimize their protective eyewear for use under ear cup devices.

The ESS Crossbow eyeshield is compliant with U.S. Federal OSHA, ANSI Z87.1+, U.S. MIL SPEC MIL-PRF-31013, and CE EN 166. All Crossbow™ lenses provide 100% UVA/UVB protection.

The Crossbow Unit Issue Kit has met stringent requirements to earn a coveted position on the U.S. Army's APEL [Authorized Protective Eyewear List].
Military Times ESS Crossbow Suppressor Sneak Peak

"Finally — a set of eyepro that doesn’t render your over-the-ear hearing protection useless. ESS is about to release a modified version of the Crossbow eyeshield frame called the Suppressor. The Crossbow Suppressor won’t replace the Crossbow, but will be sold alone and along with it in a tactical kit. The difference between the CB and the CBS is the temple arms. The CBS arms are thinner, more flexible, shorter and have a dogleg that makes the arm ride up against your sideburns, resulting in a blessedly small profile to pass under your bang-bang earmuffs.

The thinner arm does two things: It creates a smaller profile that passes through the earcup while remaining supple enough to follow the contour of your head without pressing back on the earcup. Both of these things work to provide a great seal for better hearing protection and comfort on the range and in the field.

We used a pair for a range day and for a few days out in the field at Fort Polk recently and can say it’s no hype. They work. Our Peltors rode over them without issue. At the end of the day there was no temple-ache. As it got dark, changing from gray to clear lens was painless. The rotating catch (called DEDBOLT) on the bridge snaps open and releases the middle of the lens. Pull the lens down and it’s out. Shove the outboard edges of the incoming lens into the temple and rotate it up till it snaps then lock the DEDBOLT catch down and roll on. It’s up their with Smith’s PivLock Aegis as the easiest lens swap mechanism we’ve seen on an eyeshield. The Pivlock is a hair easier, but DEDBOLT lens can be switched out a little faster since there’s only one catch and you don’t have to change your grip.

In everyday use, the CBS arms don’t hold the eyewear as securely as the standard arms because they don’t have the rubber on the arms to keep them from sliding off. ESS includes a retaining strap that snaps into the ends of the arms and works perfectly when the CBS are worn without Peltors. The strap does get under the helmet though, and it did occasionally catch and pull the short hairs on the back of the neck. But overall, it works if you want to forgo the standard Crossbow arms.

In the short-term, we had no fogging issues, nor did we expect any since the lens is anti-fog treated. As the coating wears off, we expect the lack of a vent at the top of the frame will cause a little heat/moisture build up and lead to some fogging, but the rounded shape of the frame top should allow some air movement if they aren’t worn pressing up tightly against your brow. YMMV.

A word on the coating. We talked to ESS about their coating system and found out they are using a new technology that allows them to apply a dedicated anti-fog coating on one side of the lens and a different anti-scratch coating on the outside. They tell us the traditional method is to dip the whole lens in a bath of chemicals that apply both solutions at once. The result is a cocktail that dilutes the effectiveness of each solution when compared to a discrete application. ESS says they’ve got a new production setup that allows them apply a dedicated anti-fog coating to the inside and a completely different scratch resistant coating on the outside of the lens and allowing them to overcome the compromise approach applying both coatings at once.

The kit includes two complete sets of eyewear. One Crossbow frame and one Crossbow Suppressor frame, 2 lenses (gray and clear), a retaining strap, a microfiber bag and a semi-hardshell, PALS compatible case. ESS is set to release the kit at AUSA next week with an MSRP $110. The CBS is available alone with a copper lens for $46.

GearScout Verdict? Thumbs up, guys. The Crossbow Suppressor brings unmatched comfort, protection and versatility to the tactical end-user. And, it does it while looking good. If we were forced to whine about something, we’ll hold our breath to see if fogging becomes an issue, but that’s par for the course with eyeshields.

As is our custom here at GearScout, we went a little nuts on the pics. So click through for a good look at the soon-to-be-released ESS Crossbow Suppressor."

You can also check the original article out here.

U-Rx™ Prescription Insert Also Added to APEL

Sun Valley, Idaho USA - June 2, 2010
Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) is pleased to announce that two new ESS products were added to the Department of Defense Authorized Protective Eyewear List (APEL) on May 20 at the Joint Service Advanced Planning Briefing to Industry in Springfield, VA. The ESS Crossbow™ Spectacle Kit and U-Rx™ Prescription Insert join the Profile NVG™ and Land Ops™ goggle systems as authorized eye protection choices for troops to use for training and combat operations.

"The ESS Crossbow and U-Rx represent an exciting new generation of military eye pro with unique features such as high performance anti-fog lenses, universal fit and cross-platform functionality", said Brian Ross, ESS Senior Vice President. "Our design objective was to make these products look great while maximizing performance under the most extreme conditions. The troop response has been extremely positive and we are proud to continue providing the defenders of freedom with purposeful advancements in eye protection."

Crossbow Spectacles
The ESS Crossbow offers a combination of features unlike any other ballistic eyeshield. ClearZone™ FlowCoat dual lens coatings eliminate fog inside and prevent scratches outside. The DedBolt™ Lens Lock System keeps lenses easy to swap yet secure under impact. Tri-Tech Fit™ Technology achieves a broadly universal fit without pressure points. The 2.4mm polycarbonate high-impact lenses feature ESSOPTICS™ for distortion-free optical precision. The Crossbow is built for durability and is certified to ANSI Z87.1+ and U.S. MIL-PRF-31013 standards. More information can be found at www.esseyepro.com/crossbow.

U-Rx Prescription Insert
The ESS U-Rx is the first prescription insert that can be used on multiple APEL brand platforms. The product derives its name from being universal in fit and function between most of the ESS and Oakley products with National Stock Numbers (NSNs). The U-Rx fits into:

ESS Crossbow spectacles

ESS ICE and ICE NARO spectacles

ESS Profile NVG goggles

Oakley M Frame 2.0 spectacles

Oakley SI goggles

The unique drop-in design of the U-Rx insert allows the user to quickly insert or remove the prescription lens carrier for interchange between any of the items in these five product families. The U-Rx also features a low-wrap face form angle that minimizes optical distortion for excellent visual acuity. The product is available through the DoD Optometry Electronic Catalog (ECAT) system in two configurations: a single pack or a bulk 25 pack.

About the APEL
The Authorized Protective Eyewear List (APEL) is comprised of ballistic spectacles and goggles that have been tested and certified to meet or exceed the standards for the U.S. Army. The APEL has been widely accepted and has been adopted in whole or in part for use in all of the U.S. military services. The APEL was created by the Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier, the organization responsible for virtually everything a Soldier wears or carries.

New APEL Items:

Crossbow

ESS Crossbow APEL Spectacle Kit

ESS P/N: 740-0384

NSN: 4240-01-583-5742

Clear Replacement Lenses, 10-pack

ESS P/N: 740-0421

NSN: 4240-01-583-5748

Smoke Gray Replacement Lenses, 10-pack

ESS P/N: 740-0420

NSN: 4240-01-583-5786

Replacement Hard Case

ESS P/N: 740-0445

NSN: 4240-01-583-5969

Replacement Frame Kit

ESS P/N: 740-0446

NSN: 4240-01-583-5973

U-Rx

ESS / Oakley U-Rx Prescription Insert, 1-pack

ESS P/N: 740-0411

NSN: 6540-01-584-0170

ESS / Oakley U-Rx Prescription Insert, 25-pack

ESS P/N: 740-0444

NSN: 6540-01-584-0176

ESS Announces Official Entry into Airsoft Market

Dedicated product line and website facilitate safer eye protection on the Airsoft Battlefield

April 10, 2009 -- Sun Valley, ID USA
Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) today officially announced its entry into the global Airsoft market, a tactical training exercise and modern combat sport in which spherical non-metallic rounds are fired from non-lethal weapons. ESS, a leading manufacturer in ballistic eye protection for military, law enforcement and fire/rescue professionals worldwide, now offers a dedicated line of eye pro products specifically adapted for use on the Airsoft Battlefield. ESS timed the launch of its Airsoft-optimized product line to coincide with the unveiling of its dedicated Airsoft website, www.essairsoft.com, where these specialized products are now available for purchase.

"For years, ESS eye pro has been saving eyes and lives on battlefields around the world," said Brian Ross, ESS Sr. VP Sales & Marketing. "ESS recognizes that although military goggles are built to withstand ballistic threats far greater than what is seen in Airsoft, Airsoft rounds pose a unique hazard that even military goggles are not designed to protect against. Because Airsoft rounds do not typically penetrate and embed in the skin, they can bounce and redirect in ways that shrapnel does not, including up and around a goggle frame. ESS believes the new ESS Airsoft product line to be the first and only authentic military eye pro system that provides both the impact protection and coverage necessary for proper eye safety on the Airsoft Battlefield."

Airsoft, whether for tactical training or recreation, is a dangerous activity, and eyes are perhaps the most vulnerable portion of the body. Although there is currently no official safety standard for Airsoft eye protection, the Airsoft community has traditionally focused primarily on the issue of impact resistance, loosely referencing the ANSI Z87.1 standard as the base level for safe Airsoft eye protection. However, this impact-only approach does not take into consideration the importance of coverage. While a sunglass can meet the ANSI standard, it leaves large areas around the lenses unprotected and vulnerable to a round passing directly, or indirectly, into the eye area. For this reason, ESS highly discourages the use of any sunglass or spectacle in Airsoft, as well as any other goggle that does not have an Airsoft adapter designed to provide additional coverage from Airsoft rounds.

The cornerstone of the new ESS Airsoft product line is the ESS Cortex Clip™, a rigid polycarbonate adapter that snaps onto the outside of ESS Profile™ Series goggles. This patent-pending attachment adapts to ESS Profile NVG™ and ESS Profile TurboFan™ goggles, adding essential coverage in the nose and lower cheek area to help prevent rounds from passing underneath the goggle frame and into the eye area. The ESS Profile Airsoft™ is an Airsoft-optimized configuration that features the Cortex Clip™ and foam-free vents for enhanced anti-fog performance at an affordable price.

Additional information about Airsoft eye protection and the new ESS Airsoft product line can be found at www.essairsoft.com.

ESS Launches New Logo

Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) today officially unveiled its new logo and marketing identity. A dramatic and comprehensive overhaul to all of its branding has been underway for nearly 12 months, culminating in the launch of the new logo on the company's 11th anniversary.

Founded in 1998, ESS is one of the largest suppliers of military, law enforcement and fire/rescue eye protection worldwide. Engineered with performance-driven technology developed in the sports arena, ESS eye protection products are built to withstand some of the planet's most hostile conditions, including ballistic threats inherent to battlefields and extreme temperatures faced by firefighters.

"The ESS name has always been associated with toughness and reliability," said Steve Dondero, ESS Marketing Vice President. "Our goal with the new logo was to build off the heritage of the original design, but to modernize its look to better reflect the forward-thinking nature of our company. ESS has revolutionized the protective eyewear industry more than any other company, and it is fitting that our logo should communicate a more contemporary message in line with our continued path of product innovation."ESS planned the new logo roll-out to coincide with the launch of several new products slated to hit in the 2009 calendar year. As part of its identity rebranding, ESS has refined its corporate tagline to "High Adrenaline Eye Pro", and is also introducing an enhanced website: www.esseyepro.com.

ESS will be working with its distributors and vendors to help roll out the new brand over the next few months. The goal is to integrate the new logo and branding elements into all marketing categories within the worldwide military, law enforcement, and firefighting channels.

ESS Introduces Profile NVG™ Goggles with OpFoam™ Face Padding

Eye Safety Systems (ESS) announced that its industry-leading Profile NVG™ goggles will include OpFoam™ face padding as a standard feature beginning in July 2008. The introduction of ESS OpFoam™ face padding will significantly improve the contoured fit, comfort, and seal of Profile NVG™ goggles against the face. OpFoam™ was initially released on the premium ESS Profile TurboFan™ goggles in early 2007 and achieved high customer satisfaction.

"The introduction of OpFoam is a game-changing upgrade for the most popular combat goggles in the world," said John Dondero, ESS President. "We are excited to make the Profile NVG goggles more comfortable for all our customers who could use fewer distractions from their important duties. I'm confident that we've delivered a padding system that works better than anything else currently on the market."

ESS' military and law enforcement customers operate in harsh environments, and they require goggles that can do the same. OpFoam™ face padding is constructed with proprietary tear-resistant materials designed for exceptional performance under the worst conditions. The pebbled texture of the padding adds friction to keep the goggles from slipping on the face, while the sealed skin surface prevents sand, dust, sunscreen, and oils from contaminating the foam. With gap-sealing properties in an 1/8" thickness, the face conforming design optimizes fit in a low profile package. It is also flame resistant, contains anti-fungal properties for dermal hygiene, and is easy to clean.

Listed on the U.S. Army's Authorized Protective Eyewear List (APEL) and authorized by the U.S. Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard, ESS Profile NVG™ goggles are the most widely-issued ballistic goggles worldwide. Profile NVG™ goggles with OpFoam™ meet the most rigorous test standards for ballistic goggles and are designed for maximum compatibility with helmet-mounted night vision devices. The Profile NVG™ is supported by several prescription lens carriers and is also available in an Asian Fit model.

Everest.

On the battlefield or at high altitudes, Squiz depends on his gear, and he put ESS goggles and glasses to the ultimate test as he braved Everest's subzero temperatures, howling winds and high altitudes well above "the death zone." Following his final, harrowing push from Camp 4 up to the Roof of the World, Squiz had this to say about the performance of his ESS eyewear:

"Although it was a hard slog and a few difficulties arose on the final push to the summit it was a successful trip. This would not have been possible without the support from ESS. I wore your sunglasses constantly. On summit day, I used ESS Profile TurboFan goggles. These were excellent and very appropriate with the built-in fan. The fan worked perfectly. The fan never once failed and I kept it on the whole time. If you incorporate a pair of category 4 lenses, I think these goggles would be a major attraction to climbers. Everyone was impressed with the fan and it would most likely be the difference for most mountaineers when making a choice on what goggles to buy."

Visit http://www.fighthunger.org/everest/blog to learn more about Squiz's challenging and noble endeavor and to donate to the UN's WFP.

Sun Valley, Idaho, USAÂ

The British Ministry of Defense (Defense Clothing Integrated Project Team) awarded "Contract No. DC3ESL/5185 for the Supply of Protective Eyewear" to Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) of Sun Valley, Idaho USA, via their UK agent, EPS UK Ltd. The four-year contract, announced 7 July 2005, is for the supply of the ESS Advancer V-12™ goggle, the ESS ICE 2.4™ spectacle, and the ESS Vice™ Rx Insert. An urgent initial delivery of 28,000 units was completed in August for British troops deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. The next delivery, also 28,000 units, will be made in October.

The decision was the result of a three-month solicitation, which itself was the culmination of more than 15 months of careful trial, evaluation, and development. The MOD required a single manufacturer to supply both ballistic military goggles and spectacles, along with an interchangeable prescription insert. Project Director, Major John Stoddart, commented, "We went through a challenging and rigorous selection process from which ESS was selected to provide protective eyewear for British Forces personnel who are deployed on Operations in extremely demanding and dangerous environments." ESS produced a unique combination of impact protection, anti-fog technology, interchangeable lenses (smoke, clear, and amber), Rx compatibility, and integration with existing equipment (helmet, NVG, and weapon sight). Major Stoddart said of the selection of ESS, "We are delighted that ESS is supporting the British MOD with the supply of eye protection."

The contract is the second significant British selection of ESS products in the last year. In October 2004, a Contract Award Notice cited "technical merit, quality, delivery date, price, and cost effectiveness" as the primary criteria for selecting the same two ESS products for an Urgent Operational Requirement of more than 50,000 units. Contrary to misleading press releases published earlier this year, no other manufacturer has recently supplied significant quantities of eyewear to British forces. "ESS is honored to be exclusively selected by the UK MOD," said ESS President and CEO, John Dondero, "We look forward to a lasting partnership in eyewear innovation to protect British soldiers."

The ESS Advancer V-12™ and ICE 2.4™ are the first goggle and spectacle ever widely issued to British troops. Permanent NATO stock numbers have been cataloged. UK soldier modernization project teams (FIST), the PECOC program (Personnel Equipment & Common Operational Clothing), and Urban Warfare are also evaluating ESS eye protection systems.

ESS Creates Rx Insert Lenses for its CDI™ Sunglasses

Sun Valley, Idaho, USA

To meet the needs of their customers who require corrective lenses, ESS has launched a new prescription insert accessory for their popular CDI sunglasses. This new insert allows for the rapid interchange of multiple lens types - clear and tinted, or prescription and non-prescription - all in one sunglass frame.

The CDI sunglasses include two sets of interchangeable lenses, which can be swapped out by sliding the lenses in and out of the frame. Now, ESS is introducing the CDI Prescription Insert system, which consists of a pair of lens carriers that slide in and out of the frame just like the standard CDI lenses. The lens carriers can be fitted with prescription lenses by any optometrist, and then inserted in the CDI frame.

This system is ideal for those who want to have clear and tinted prescription lenses, or those who occasionally wear contact lenses and want their sunglasses to be able to accommodate either standard lenses or prescription lenses.

Important safety note for sunglass users operating in proximity to fragmentation hazards:
ESS strongly recommends that optometrists use only high-impact polycarbonate prescription lenses to optimize impact resistance in the CDI sunglass. With the standard, non-prescription polycarbonate CDI lenses installed, the sunglass meets all the requirements of ANSI Z87.1 and the MIL Specification MIL-PRF-31013. Due to the variability of prescription lens shapes, materials, and thicknesses, it is impracticable to determine if the sunglass system is compliant with those impact standards when a prescription lens is installed. High-impact polycarbonate prescription lens material will maximize the impact resistance of the system well beyond that offered by CR-39 resin or other common materials used in prescription lens manufacturing.

ESS Selected as Sole Goggle Awardee for the US DOD Combat Eye Protection Solicitation

ESS ICE-2 Spectacle Also Added to the Authorized Equipment List

Sun Valley, Idaho, USA

Eye Safety Systems, Inc. (ESS) is the sole recipient of the goggle award for the US Department of Defense's Combat Eye Protection (CEP) solicitation #DAAD16-03-R-0027.

The solicitation process spanned approximately one year ending August 26, 2004. During this time, a comprehensive evaluation of commercial and developmental eye protection systems was conducted by the US Army's PEO Soldier Office in cooperation with Marine Corps Systems Command and the Natick Soldier Center to determine which products would be placed on a list of authorized combat eyewear and considered for multi-service type classification.

The evaluation considered four principal product factors, listed below in order of importance:

1. Ballistic Characteristics
2. Human Factors
3. Physical Characteristics
4. Carrying Case

The evaluation also considered manufacturing and warranty factors, as well as past performance. At the conclusion of the CEP solicitation, the ESS Vehicle Ops™ model goggle (NSN: 4240-01-525-5101) was selected for the contract award, with special mention of two other ESS models that had previously been widely purchased through the Rapid Fielding Initiative (RFI). Those models are the ESS Profile NVG™ goggle (NSNs:4240-01-504-6222 and 4240-01-504-5727) and the ESS Land Ops™ goggle (NSN: 4240-01-504-0052), which continue to be the goggles most widely procured by the US Department of Defense. The award notification letter commented on the performance of these three ESS products:

After a very careful evaluation process it was determined that, of the three goggles proposed by Eye Safety Systems, Inc., the Vehicle Ops Goggle best meets the Government's needs at this time. While the overall rating for all three goggles was considered outstanding, limited resources resulted in the selection of one goggle for this solicitation, the Vehicle Ops Goggle. Natick Contracting Officer

At this time, the only commercial goggles authorized for use by the US Army are the ESS Profile NVG™, Land Ops™, and Vehicle Ops™ goggles. The ESS ICE-2™ spectacle was also placed on the list of authorized combat eye protection systems as a result of the CEP solicitation evaluation.
